There is still time for kids to sign up and volunteers to register for Alabama’s fifth-annual C.A.S.T. for Kids event. It will take place on May 12 at Lake Martin out of Wind Creek State Park.
“C.A.S.T. for Kids is a one-day outdoor fishing event that provides disabled and special-needs’ children an opportunity to learn to fish. For many of the children, this is the first opportunity to fish because of limitations caused by their disability,” said Brian Atkins, director for the C.A.S.T. for Kids Alabama chapter.
C.A.S.T. for Kids is for youth ages 6 to 18 who have little or no fishing experience. Children from children’s hospitals, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald House and others have been major sources of registrants for these events. However, if this is the first time you’ve ever heard of C.A.S.T. for Kids, and you or a youth you know qualifies to participate, then fill out the “C.A.S.T. Participant Form” at <www.castforkidsalabama.org>.
Participating kids are matched up with expert anglers from the BASS Federation and/or other fishing or service organizations who will take them on boats and teach them the basics of fishing, safety and fishing ethics.
“C.A.S.T. for Kids is not only fun for the participants but for those who volunteer for the events. Kids learn to enjoy the outdoors and fishing while volunteers learn a valuable lesson about living with a disability and other limitations,” said Brian.
Brian needs sponsors, volunteers or boaters willing to help. He asks that you go online, fill out the form and mail it to him. The web address is <www.castforkidsalabama.org>.
Brian’s e-mail is <BAtkins@CASTforKidsAlabama.org>, and his phone number is (205) 520-4189.
The very first C.A.S.T. for Kids was held in Eastern Washington State in 1992. The first C.A.S.T. for Kids event in Alabama was in 2008.
