Alabama’s National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Championship was held April 5 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center. More than 1,200 students from across the state, grades three through 12, competed for the chance to advance to the NASP National Tournament May 11-12 in Louisville, Ky.

The event crowned male and female individual state champions, and team state championships were decided in high-school, middle-school and elementary-school divisions. The scoring was based on Olympic-style target archery competition.

“This event is the culmination of five regional events that the kids had to shoot in order to qualify to attend,” said Marisa Futral, DCNR’s hunter education coordinator. “We had to go to regional events two years ago because we ran out of room at the state event, and we wanted to give every child who wanted to participate at least some type of archery competition to attend. More than 2,000 youth shot in the regional events this year, and 1,200 of those shot at state, making this venue the largest youth archery competition in Alabama. Archery is a sport these kids can participate in for the rest of their lives, not just during their school years. I am thrilled to see this many youth excited about archery.”

Sponsors for the NASP State Championship included the Alabama Chapter of the NWTF, Morrell Manufacturing Inc., the Alabama Wildlife Federation and the Alabama Conservation Enforcement Officers Association.
