Copperhead’s Outdoors in Arab has come up with an interesting twist to bowfishing tournaments—mandatory participation by kids. Copperhead’s held its first Young Arrow Slingers tournament from 6 p.m. to midnight on June 2 at Wheeler Lake.
Scott Cobbs, with Copperhead’s, said the fishing was very tough due to a front that blew in just in time for the tournament, but the kids and everyone else had a great time anyway. The tournament drew 10 teams which were required to have at least one participant younger than 17 years old as a team member.
“They had fun, and one team didn’t even come to weigh-ins they were having so much fun,” said Scott. “They just stayed out there and kept fishing.”
The top team, BS Bowfishing, took first in the Big 5 format (five biggest non-game fish), with 27.7 pounds. The team, consisting of Johnathon Cryer, Brett Slaten and Tracy Melson, all of Somerville, also won Longest Gar, with a 34-inch longnose gar. They took home $400 for Big 5 and $90 for their big gar in the 100-percent payback tournament.
The Big Fish Challenge was won by Team Reel Deal with a 9.9-lb. buffalo. Team members were Lesley Mashburn and Savanah Mashburn, of Union Hill, and Austin Hogan, of Danville. They took home $90 for the fish.
In addition to cash, prizes from sponsors Muzzy and OMT Products were also given to winning teams. All of the fish arrowed in the tournament were turned over to a Scottsboro turtle farm.
Copperhead’s will host a few more bowfishing tournaments this summer, including the Gargantuan tournament on June 30, which will weigh-in only gar, and another youth-participation tournament which Scott said will be some time in August.
