It was standing room only for AON’s Truck-Buck Shoot-Out on Saturday, July 21 at the Annual World Deer Expo in Birmingham. Onlookers witnessed some of the most impressive shooting skills in AON’s Truck-Buck history as 18 Truck-Buck V contestants nervously shot with a brand-new Chevy pickup truck up for grabs.

The Truck-Buck Shoot-Out in Birmingham was the grand finale to Truck-Buck V, AON’s 2011-12 big-buck contest where hunters who took the best deer during a week of deer season, plus three hunters who took the best ladies, youth and public-land bucks last season, competed in a pellet-rifle competition for a brand new truck.

As the rounds ticked by, and the targets got progressively more difficult, shooters were eliminated.

By the start of Round 7, only four shooters remained: Jim Hardee, of Marietta, Ga., Bill Smith, of Guin, Billy Smith, of Blountsville, and T.J. Mayfield, of Roanoke. Aiming at a raw egg at 60 feet, both Jim and Billy missed, eliminating them from the Shoot-Out. However, both T.J. and Bill connected with the egg and advanced to Round 8, another 60-foot shot at an egg. Both T.J. and Bill hit their eggs in Rounds 8 and 9, but in Round 10, Bill missed the egg at 60 feet, opening the door for T.J.

A buzz moved through the crowd as spectators realized that if T.J. hit the egg, it meant he’d win the truck. It didn’t take long for T.J. to make the shot, but when he sent the pellet flying, the egg exploded. T.J. was given the keys to a beautiful new Chevy, a heck of a way to celebrate his 29th birthday.

AON is going to do it all over again! Truck Buck VI starts Oct. 15, the opening day of bow season. Turn to page 44 for more information.
