Guntersville: Level: 0.5 feet below full pool. Temp: Low 80s. Clarity: Lightly stained.
Bass: Fair. Guide Mike Carter reports, “This past month on Lake Guntersville has been very tough with the hot temps we have had lately. The topwater bite has been productive early in the morning and evening hours. With the topwater bite, I recommend using Rattlin’ Spooks and Xcalibur Zell Pops on some of the visible grassline edges. The middle of the day bite has been slow with the lack of current. The fish can still be taken on some of the deeper river and creek ledges with 3/4-oz. or 1-oz. Scroungers and also 1-oz. football-head jigs from Choo Choo Lures. The best colors of jigs have been green pumpkin and also the avocado color. The fish are starting to school up on the surface now, and this bite can be fast and fun if you can get to them in time before the fish move back to the deep water. I would also recommend trying some night fishing for some great spinnerbait action. Fishing at night can be more relaxing because you get away from the heat and gnats, and the fish have been more active lately at night with the very hot temps we have been experiencing the last few weeks. When fishing at night, I recommend using 1/2-oz. single Colorado blade spinnerbaits from Choo Choo Lures in purple and red or black and red colors. Slow-rolling these baits off of the deeper grasslines can be very productive and exciting. If the spinnerbait bite slows down, also consider using 10-inch worms in green pumpkin and tequila sunrise colors.” Guide Jake Davis said the ledge bite has been tough because of a lack of current flow, but he said the lake is gearing up for a great early fall frog bite. “We’ve transitioned to spinnerbait, topwater, jig and a soft plastic bite, and let’s not forget the ever popular A-rig. The better fish can be found in 6 to 21 feet of water along the main channel and back channel grass. Crankbaits and jigs are best on the channel ledges around old creeks and roadbeds. Our best fish came on Tightline Football Head jigs rigged with a Missile Baits Turbo Tails in green pumpkin-tequila and Guntersville Special. Also try a Texas-rigged Tomahawk worm from Missile Baits and topwater baits such as a Spro Frog, Sammy, Pop-R and a black/red buzzbait from Assassinator. As we progress into August, watch for the frog bite to really heat up. The ledge bite should remain good until early September. A few good tactics for ledge fishing will be DD22 crankbaits, 1/2- to 3/4-oz. football-head jigs and of course the ever popular Alabama Rig.” Capt. Mike Gerry reports, “As we get into August fishing on Guntersville, the thing you can bet your last dollar on is the start of the frog fishing. The grass is thick. The sun burns the top of the grass, and water temps are cooler under the grass. What all that means is the fish move into the thicker grass, and the topwater bite is on from August through October. If you want to have fun, try your luck with some frog fishing. It just doesn’t get any better than Guntersville frog fishing that starts in August. Water temperatures are in the high 80s, but under the grass it drops five to eight degrees, and that brings the bass into the grass.”
